It’s just not that easy, the benefits of mentorship.

I have a tendency to think that I can do anything. Even if I’ve no experience in that endeavour. This can be both an asset and a hindrance at times. Usually I can “figure things out” based on my experiences and research. Admittedly it results in some false starts but those are our way of learning. Aren’t they?

Having a mentor helps to provide guidance and take away someof the uncertainty Ive held and allowed me to move forward. Early in my career I didn’t really have a mentor. Employers would tell me I needed experience in “blah” and not provide guidance on how to achieve it. To my detriment at times, I am very self sufficient, and I figured I could just work it out. With the exception of some math as it evades me. WRONG.

Mentors and teachers of all sorts provide one with guidance and a space in which errors may be made as part of the process and giving insight as to how to avoid them in the future.

THis is the case with some of my current efforts. THe ideas I have in my head are not always easily transportable to the built environment without some misteps. Do not let the thought of making mistakes prevent you from realizing your ideas and keep trying. When in doubt seek classes and learning through mentors, teachers and observation. It helps provide driection. This does not mean you will not make mistakes. Art in and of itself seems, at times, to be a series of errors. It is part of the process!

As I work thorugh the new efforts I wil share my errors with you as a form of guidance, both for me and you.

Regards,

Rob
