Gauging my next steps

I find it is always difficult to select which pieces to take to each show. Gauging the audience’s preferences is difficult. Is it common to select specific pieces to cater to the potential buyers tastes or continue in the vein that makes me happy and expresses my ideas?

The challenge I face is income vs. my preferences. In an effort to have sales and generate income, I am tempted to taylor my offerings to the taste of the viewer. However that makes it difficult to advance my own preferences as it takes time away from these efforts.

As I am new to the art market. Never before selling any of my pieces, only buying those of others I have liked. THe hybrid approach of offering some pieces that cater to my perceived taste of the buyers and representing some of the more artistic pieces as well.

I realize this dilutes my presence to a degree. How does one manage income needed vs. pursuing my own goals?
