The difficulty with traveling shows
I have found the biggest challenge to going to regional or traveling shows is that, unless they are within driving distance, transporting larger pieces is difficult. They must be shipped which adds an additional cost to what may be an overall loss to begin with. As an emerging artist without a following the likelihood of sales are limited and most often it is for exposure and getting a feel for reactions to my work. All have been favorable and I enjoy the discussions with viewers.
I have decided though to step back from regional shows if I am not able to take my larger pieces. Most are created with multiple overlays and meant to be viewed in the larger format. When printed to a size easily transported they lose their impact. Admittedly this limits the opportunities for exposure but the tradeoff as I see it is worth it. I am going to concentrate on local shows and galleries which may allow me to display works on consignment and hopefully gain better exposure.
